The Big Thompson canyon
US‑34 west to Estes is the best drive in the county and the hardest single trip on a car’s front end. Gravel off the shoulders, canyon grit, summer bug strike on the bumper and mirrors, and a wet film on the return leg that dries on before you are home.

Irrigation water and the lakes
Lake Loveland, Boyd, and the ditch network that feeds them. Lakeside and park sprinklers throw hard water across whatever is parked near them, and it dries to a mineral spot that a rinse will not lift. It has to be taken off deliberately.

The east side, in harvest
Beet and feed trucks off the county roads out towards Kersey and Johnstown put a fine agricultural dust on everything, and it turns to a paste in the first rain. Cars parked on unpaved pads pick up the clay with it.

Cottonwoods, downtown
The old streets around Fourth and Cleveland are lined with mature cottonwood, which means seed in the cowl and the door seals in June, and sap on the roof for the rest of the summer.
